I've lived in Lincoln Park, Lakeview, and Logan Square, and I've spent decades working across the city and the suburbs, so I know that terrain well enough to help you skip the guesswork. Proof that June happened.

It’s not all real estate. Some showings, a birthday, a panel where I got to talk about the thing I actually care about, a closing that made someone cry happy tears, the Cubs (obviously), and the people who make it all worth doing.

Whether you’re watching from the lakefront or a lawn chair in the suburbs, Chicagoland does the 4th right.

This weekend has something everywhere you look.

In the city: Navy Pier goes big this year. Biggest show in their history. 10 pm on July 4. Grant Park Orchestra plays their annual Independence Day Salute at Millennium Park. And the African/Caribbean International Festival of Life takes over Union Park July 3 through 5.

In the suburbs: Frontier Days in Arlington Heights runs July 1 through 5 with rides, food, and fireworks. Mount Prospect Lions Club Festival is also going all week. And nearly every suburb has its own fireworks show July 3 or 4.

Golden hour on the lake. Fireworks over the skyline. A neighborhood patio that’s somehow always exactly the right temperature in July.

Chicago summers are short and everyone here knows it, which is exactly why we don’t waste them.

This is why I never get tired of showing people this city. It’s not just a place to live. It’s a feeling you get to have every single day for about four months straight.

The best time to talk about future care is before you need to. Once there’s a crisis, you’re not having a conversation anymore. You’re reacting to one.

A fall is rarely just a fall.

Hospitalization can age people faster than birthdays do. A week in the hospital can take more out of someone than a year at home.

Function matters more than diagnosis. What someone can still do day to day tells you more than any label does.

Medication side effects often look like aging. Confusion, balance, mood. Worth a second look before assuming it’s just age.

The first signs of cognitive decline aren’t always memory problems. Sometimes it’s word-finding, or losing the thread of a task.

Loneliness is a health condition.

Driving is usually about identity, not transportation. That’s why the conversation is so hard.

Your parent may hide difficulties from you. Not because they don’t trust you. Because they’re scared of what happens if you find out.

The goal isn’t living longer. It’s living well, on their terms.

The lakefront fills up before 8am. Festival tents go up every weekend. Rooftop bars that sat dark all winter suddenly have a three hour wait. The neighborhoods come outside and you remember why you live here.

I have spent summers in other cities. Nice cities. Good cities. None of them felt like this.

There is something about a Chicago summer that makes people forget the February they swore they were leaving. Every year. Without fail.

Chicago in July is genuinely one of the best cities in the world. And I say that as someone who has lived here her whole life.

Here’s where I start when someone visits:

Walk the Riverwalk. It’s free and it puts you in the middle of everything.

Take the architecture river cruise. About $45 to $55, 90 minutes, and you will never see the skyline the same way again. This is the one I insist on.

Go to the Lincoln Park Zoo. Also free. And the neighborhood around it is some of the most beautiful in the city.

Hit up Lou Malnati’s for deep dish. Order The Lou with sausage. Plan for 45 minutes because real deep dish takes time.

Catch a game at Wrigley Field. Take the Red Line up, grab a drink at one of the rooftop bars across the street before first pitch and soak it in. There is no better summer afternoon in this city.

And if you’re here on a Wednesday or Saturday night, get to Navy Pier before dark and watch the fireworks from the lakefront. It’s one of those Chicago moments that just hits different.

The Salt Shed alone should be on your bucket list. An old Morton Salt facility turned into one of the best indoor and outdoor concert venues in the country. The bones of this building are genuinely unreal.

But if you’re new here or thinking about moving here, the live music scene is one of those things nobody warns you about.

You show up for the job or the lifestyle and then you realize this city has an actual culture. Not a curated one. A real one.

Here’s where locals actually go:
The Salt Shed (obviously). The Riviera. Thalia Hall in Pilsen. Schubas in Lakeview. The Empty Bottle in Ukrainian Village. Metro on Clark. The Hideout, which looks like a backyard shed and sounds incredible inside.

Chicago has never needed to brag about its music. It just delivers.

It depends on who you are.
If you moved here from somewhere warm and you’re terrified of snow, yes, it’s a lot. The wind off the lake is real. January is dark. February is longer than it has any right to be.

But if you’re a Chicagoan? Winter is just winter. You get a good coat, you learn which blocks are windier than others, and you find your spot. Every neighborhood has one. The coffee shop where you become a regular. The bar that fills up after the first big snow. The restaurant where you stop arguing about where to go.

Nobody leaves Chicago because of winter. They leave because of taxes or jobs or family. The weather is just the excuse.

And honestly? There’s something about surviving a Chicago winter together that makes this city feel like yours.

And no, “deep dish” is not one of them. (It’s number 10.)

Chicago gets a bad reputation from people who have never actually lived here. So let me give you the real list.

1. The neighborhoods. Not just “Chicago” but Lincoln Park, Lakeview, Logan Square, Beverly, Hyde Park, Andersonville, Pilsen, Ravenswood, the West Loop. Each one feels like its own town. You find your people and you plant yourself there.

2. The el. Gets you everywhere without a car. Which in a city with actual winters, matters more than people think.

3. The lake. Free, enormous, and right there.

4. The food scene. Legitimately world class and still somehow nationally underrated.

5. The architecture. You will not stop noticing it. Ever.

6. The arts. Theater, music, museums. Chicago punches above its weight and has for decades.

7. The parks. Neighborhood parks that actually get used by actual people.

8. The cost of living relative to other major cities. Space here is real.

9. The people. Midwestern enough to mean it when they say hello.

That is nine. I could keep going.

The first loss is when things change and you realize she’s not coming back to live there.

I hear this a lot.
And my answer is always the same: that describes about 30 suburbs. So let’s get more specific.

Because “good schools” in a district where your kid thrives in small classes looks different than “good schools” in a district with 14 AP courses and a robotics team. Both are good. They are not the same.

And 45 minutes at 8am on the Metra is not 45 minutes at 8am on the expressway.

One of those is predictable. One of those is a gamble.

Here is what I actually ask:
What does your morning look like? Do you drive or take the train? What grade is your kid in and what does she need? Do you want to walk to something on a Saturday or are you fine getting in the car?

Those answers narrow 30 suburbs down to 3 or 4. And then we go look.

🚶Wicker Park: dense, vibrant, great transit and incredible dining

🚶Old Town: Wells Street charm with easy lakefront access and no Gold Coast price tag

🚶Andersonville: the sleeper pick, walkable main street and a neighborhood that surprises people every time

🚶Streeterville: the lakefront, the Mag Mile, and the Loop all within walking distance

Different vibes. Different price points. Same answer when someone asks if you need a car.

Yes, you will commute.

Metra into the city. Maybe 35 minutes. Maybe 45.

And here is what nobody mentions.

That ride is yours. No roommate. No neighbor. No open office. Just you, your coffee, your podcast, your thoughts.

City dwellers pay a lot of money for that kind of quiet and they never actually get it.

The commute is not the sacrifice everyone makes it out to be. For a lot of people it becomes the best part of the day.
